The impact of a Home Away From Home

A Home Away From Home is more than a place to sleep.

Depending on local needs, Homes can provide meals, transport to hospital, counselling, education, psychosocial support and other services that help families navigate treatment. They also create communities in which children and caregivers can meet families going through similar experiences.

Early results from HAFH-supported projects demonstrate just how important this support can be.

Since 2024, the Home Away From Home Programme has supported projects across nine countries, helping CCI member organisations create, expand and strengthen accommodation and support for children undergoing treatment and their families.

Success Story - Bolivia: La Casita

With support from the Home Away From Home Programme, Fundación Nuestra Esperanza (FNE) purchased a new Home in La Paz, Bolivia, which officially opened in November 2024.

The new La Casita has 11 rooms and meets approximately 60% of current demand for accommodation, compared with 28% in FNE's previous rented Home.

During its first three months:

• 36 children and their caregivers were hosted;

• 1,197 bed-nights were provided;

• 1,840 meals were served; and

• families had access to counselling, legal support, family activities and other services.

Most importantly, 100% of the families consulted during CCI's field assessment said that without the Home, they would have been unable to continue their child's treatment and would have been forced to abandon it.

2026–2027 Call for Proposals

The third Home Away From Home call is coming

On 15 September 2026, Childhood Cancer International and Sanofi Foundation will launch the third Home Away From Home Call for Proposals.

The programme supports CCI member organisations with the experience and capacity to provide accommodation and related services for children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment and their caregivers.

The 2026–2027 call will prioritise projects that purchase a new Home or expand an existing Home. Applications for operational support are also eligible, while applications to build a new Home will be considered against additional selection requirements.

The programme primarily supports projects in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including upper-middle-income countries, with the aim of supporting at least one project in each of the three main LMIC regions: Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Who can apply?

Your organisation may be eligible if:

• you are a CCI Full or Associate Member in good standing;

• your organisation has been operating for at least one year and has demonstrated its ability to support children and adolescents with cancer and their families;

• your project primarily supports children and adolescents with cancer and the parents/caregivers accompanying them;

• the project is based in a low- or middle-income country, including upper-middle-income countries;

• at least 30% of the project's total funding comes from other donors, including local donors;

• the Home is located no more than 25 km / 16 miles from the relevant paediatric oncology unit or healthcare service; and

• your organisation can demonstrate how the Home will contribute to treatment adherence and how its impact will be measured.

Additional requirements apply depending on whether your organisation is proposing to purchase, expand, build or operate a Home.

We strongly encourage applicants to submit well before the deadline. After the closing date, CCI and the HAFH Working Group will not be able to request or accept missing documents, and incomplete applications will be disqualified.

Building sustainable Homes

CCI's support does not end when a grant is awarded.

Recipient organisations are monitored throughout implementation and may receive mentoring from CCI and organisations with experience in developing and managing Homes Away From Home.

Projects are also required to measure their impact — including the number of children and families supported, bed-nights, meals, transport and other services provided, as well as longer-term outcomes related to families' experiences, well-being and treatment adherence.

This helps us understand not simply how many families a Home reaches, but what difference having a Home Away From Home makes to their cancer journey.

Together, we can remove barriers to treatment and help more children and adolescents with cancer receive the care they need.

Success Story - Malaysia: Ipoh Home of Hope

The National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) opened the Ipoh Home of Hope in June 2024, creating the only Home of its kind in the Perak region.

By April 2025, the Home had supported 28 children and their caregivers, provided 1,820 bed-nights and 4,028 hospital shuttle trips, alongside counselling, financial assistance, nutrition support and other services.

During focus group discussions, 100% of participating caregivers said that without the Home they would not have been able to begin or continue their child's treatment.

These experiences reinforce what lies at the heart of the programme: when families have somewhere safe to stay and the practical support they need during treatment, one more barrier to completing treatment can be removed.

What can be funded?

Two types of projects are eligible:

Capital Projects - Up to €150,000 for projects involving:

• the purchase of a new Home;

• expansion of an existing Home; or

• construction of a new Home, subject to additional requirements.

Operational Projects - From €10,000 to €40,000 for:

• rental costs;

• home maintenance;

• existing operating costs; or

• additional services provided as part of the Home.

How to apply

Applications must include:

• the completed Application Form;

• the completed Budget Template;

• the completed Gantt Chart;

• the CV of the project lead;

• audited financial statements or the organisation's most recent financial reports;

• relevant legal and registration documents; and

• a letter of recommendation from the relevant paediatric oncology unit.

Additional supporting documents are required for projects involving the purchase, construction or expansion of a Home.

The Application Form, Budget and Gantt Chart must be completed in English, using the templates provided. The Budget must be completed in Euros.
