11 – 12 June 2011, Chengdu (China)
The ICCCPO 2011 Asia Regional Meeting was held in Chengdu, China between the 11th & 12th of June 2011. There were a total of 126 participants with 95 from 11 Chinese cities / region; 22 from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Nepal, and Singapore; and 9 from Hong Kong attending the two days ICCCPOAsia regional meeting.
It was another successful meeting achieving the following objectives:
- reinforce the mission of ICCCPO: to share information and experience in order to improve access to the best possible care for children with cancer, particularly in Asia;
- build therapeutic alliances between medical professionals and parent groups in Asia countries; and
- strengthen the connections between ICCCPO Asia members.
It was nice to hear during and after the meeting from parents who attended the meeting that they appreciated the Chinese doctors’ support in this meeting. This laid a good foundation to build a strong therapeutic alliance between medical professionals and parent groups in China.
However, the language barrier was a challenge to us as most Chinese parents did not speak English and vice versa foreign participants did not speak Chinese. Thanks to the volunteer team in Guanzhou for the great preparation work and for translating all presentations into both languages just days before the meeting – and thanks to the student interpreters from Chengdu University to provide on-spot interpretation.
The successful Asia regional meeting is the collective effort of the organising committee which comprises of parents and volunteers from Hong Kong and Guangzhou working together with the organising team from the Chengdu Women & Children’s Medical Centre. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the meeting, and also Chengdu Women and Children’s Hospital for providing the conference facility for a day free of charge.
