We are very pleased to announce the recipients of the Home Away from Home grants, byChildhood Cancer International and Foundation S.

We are excited of the prospects of these projects which aim to decrease treatment abandonment of children and adolescents with cancer in low- and middle-income countries. This is exactly the sense of purpose of our collective ambition.

Research and the experience show that one of the main reasons for parents not seeking cancer treatment for their children, or for treatment abandonment, even where medical treatment is readily available, is due to socio-economic factors. Often treatment centres are located in the main cities, where is too expensive for many poor families to stay.

Accommodation provided – a Home Away From Home - enables children and families to overcome this obstacle, and to stay free of charge in a home where there psychosocial and essential needs are met.

This year we have the privilege to welcome new sponsors for this initiative. Thanks to the generous support of Her Royal Highness Princess Adelah Bint Abdallah (Saudi Arabia) and Fundación “El Sueño de Vicky” (Spain), we were able to support more organizations and make a bigger impact!

We received 27 compelling and worthy proposals from CCI member organizations worldwide.

Thanks to all the organizations who sent their projects – the time and effort is appreciated. This was hard decision for the committee, and after careful assessment and much consideration the home projects of the following organizations were selected:

  • Ethiopia, Tesfa Addis Parents Childhood Cancer Organization - Capital Project, house construction.

  • Kenya, Hope for Cancer Kids - Operational Project, rental and the running of a Home.

  • México, Manos que Sanan AC - Operational Project, running a Home.

  • Nepal, Ramesh Gupta Memorial Trust - Capital Project, house construction.

  • Perú, Fundación Peruana del Cáncer - Operational Project, running a Home.

  • Ukraine, Charitable Foundation Zaporuka - Operational Project, room rentals.

We are confident that these 6 projects will combat treatment abandonment, thus contributing to the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer goal of achieving a 60% survival rate by 2030.

We invite the organizations that received awards to share the good news among their communities and publicly. We look forward to seeing the impact of the Home Away From Home projects, and the reports on how children, adolescents and parents/carer s will benefit!

A deep thank you to all in the CCI community that participated in this programme.

Let’s keep saving lives together!
